John Andersen is a native of Spokane, WA. Athletic Training was introduced to him in HS, followed by an undergraduate degree in Physical Education with Distinction from Washington State University. Continuing his education in Physical Therapy, John received his MA from Stanford in 1972. Success came early and often in John’s career, performing Athletic Training duties with the 1971-72 Rose Bowl Champions, 3 East-West Shrine games, USOC Long Distance Training Center, and National AAU Track & Field Championships.
John’s career path began at Washington University where he served as Athletic Trainer in the Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Departments. In 1975 John continued his successful career in professional sports, beginning with the Seattle Sounders of the NASL, and in 1981, moved to San Antonio to become Head Athletic Trainer for the NBA Spurs for 17 seasons..
Leadership has always played a role in John’s life and career. While in Seattle, he served in many capacities for District 10 of NATA, as well as numerous speaking engagements in support of student athletic trainers, including 1975 NATA National Convention. When he landed in San Antonio, AAATA Hall of Fame member Bernie LaReau, mentored him and quickly got him involved with AAATA and local HS Athletic Trainers. During his tenure with the Spurs, John was actively involved with National Basketball Trainers Association (NBTA). Highlighting his efforts with the NBTA, John led in establishing the Richard E. Vandervoort Memorial Scholarship Fund. Vandervoort, a longtime Washington State and Houston Rockets Athletic Trainer, and 1985 NATA Hall of Famer, was known for his tireless efforts in our field, setting high standards for the Athletic Training profession. Now known as the NBATA Foundation, these scholarships have been awarded since 1989 to undergraduate and graduate students in NATA accredited programs. Quality leadership does not go unnoticed. In 1996, the NATA honored John with Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award.
